    Julius Hawley Seelye (September 14, – May 12, ) was a missionary, author, United States representative, and former president of Amherst College. The system of Latin honors in use at many universities worldwide is said to have been created by him.

ISAAC SEELYE was born in Fairfield, Connecticut, in , but did not enter College until the Senior year. In he emigrated to Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York, and is said to have been for a time the Principal of the Academy there.

When Professor Seelye was elected, there was a minority of the trustees, and perhaps a majority of the faculty, who were at first in favor of the appointment of a distinguished layman, who might give dignity to the office and bring reputation to the college.
